Kerastase Aminexil Anti-Hairloss and Scalp Massager Trial

A few months ago, I blogged about the launch of Kérastase Aminixil (please click here). Now here's the review after using the serum and limited massager. I got someone facing hair fall issues to try the Kérastase Aminexil with the limited edition massager.

His scalp is also pinkish and oily, with one or two red pimple-like bumps. On the first day the redness of the scalp subsided by the time the bottle of Kerastase Aminexil is used up. But on the days that follow there wasn't any reduction of scalp redness.

According to Kérastase, it seems like my trial partner is suffering from a super oily scalp, and the redness is caused by bacteria attacking the scalp. Explaining further, a representative from Kérastase said that humidity encourages the growth of bacteria, resulting in the appearance of pimples on scalp.

In most cases, those with hair fall and oily scalp issues would be encouraged to use control oily scalp conditions before using Aminexil, if oily and redness are the main concern. Reason being, this serum stops hair loss, but does not address scalp oiliness. Although it contains Madecassoside, which soothes skin or scalp inflammations, it does not prevent oiliness caused by over-active oil glands. So bacteria will return to the scalp once it is oily. 

In addition, those with super oily scalp should avoid stimulating the oil glands on the scalp further by over-massaging as it might result in over-stimulating the oil glands, leaving a scalp that is oilier than before.

The brush boosts better blood circulation to promote better hair growth, however in those with oily scalp conditions, avoid over using the brush. 

I notice that more hair seems to have fallen out after 3 days into the trial, but the remaining hair seems to become coarser than before with continued use of Aminexil. Does using this serum cause an initial hair fall before new and healthier hair grows back?

Kérastase: Yes, as this product helps to soften the collagen around the hair follicle. In the initial 10 days, consumers might experience hair loss in the initial application for old thin hair to drop off, after which healthier hair will grow out. 

(Four days) After starting on the Aminexil, scalp becomes healthier and hair strands are coarser than before.

Kérastase Massager:

I used the massager on my scalp. The cooling little "fingers" on the massager soothe scalp and I feel relaxed by its cool temperature and rhythmic tapping.

VERDICT: Aminexil certainly helps to fortify hair strands and reduce hair fall. Parts of my trial partner’s head where the serum was used has healthier, coarser hair than before. Scalp redness is reduced with continued use within days of starting on the regime.

Massager: The gentle tapping motion of the two AAA_batteries-operated massager is soothing and releases small doses of the serum onto scalp as it taps. It is true that as we reduce the use of the massager on scalp it is less oily than before, the day after using the Aminexil. To apply more of the serum on scalp and minimise massaging, apply serum onto scalp directly from the bottle instead of pouring into the massager. Each pack of serum comes with two applicator caps for precise application onto scalp where it is needed most, reducing splashing on hair strands.

EXCESS RESEARCH ON FALLING HAIR AND BALDING CONCERNS

A recent Kerastase's regional research reveals that hair fall concern ranks one of the top among Asian countries in recent years. So do not be shy about getting it addressed as soon as you notice it. As Dr Lim Hock Him from Clariancy Aesthetic Clinic says once hair falls out it should be addressed within two years. This is because after two years, it would be impossible to get hair to regrow on that bald spot.

I used this range for about a month. Here’s my review:

As I was having some persistent acne problems recently, the ASTERLIFT Lunamer Clear Wash, $30, cleanses my skin better than my regular anti-ageing cleanser and the inflamed pimples seem to back down a little.  Initially I thought the lotion and brightener would be enough to unclog the pores, and reduce the pimples, but of course, the acne only became less inflamed after I started using the fruit acid containing cleanser which has a light citrusy scent. I cleanse my face with this in the morning and with the cleansing oil (below).

I used this cleansing oil after my acne subsided. The Clear Wash is used to double cleanse. To remove my waterproof mascara and makeup, ASTERLIFT Lunamer Clear Cleansing Oil, $32, does a thorough job with the help of cotton pads.IIIn the past, cleansing oils tend to leave me with bumps after a while, hence I used thus cleansing oil for a month before writing this review. And I am glad to announce that I do not have any bumps or outbreak from using this. In fact, it is much lighter than most oil cleansers I have used before, does not leave my skin clogged up over time and removes my eye makeup thoroughly. Thanks to Orange oil, which gently purifies skin. Although the instruction calls for 2-3 pumps worth of the cleansing oil, I have found that a smaller face like mine can do with just one pump of this lighter oil cleanser. As I massage the cleansing oil on my skin, it becomes watery to signal being ready for the addition of water for removal. Cotton pads are used to wipe off eye makeup thoroughly before I splashed and massagedy my face with more water, and double cleanse with the Clear Wash.

The star of this range is the ASTALIFT Lunamer Brightener, $60. It is one of the first exfoliative beauty essences today, which helps you achieve smooth and translucent complexion by removing skin dulling aged keratin sitting on skin surface in one swipe and nourishing skin with a high concentration of key active ingredients. As the impurities are removed by wiping with this product, the absorption of skincare that follows is also maximised.  

ASTALIFT Lunamer Lotion I (Light) / II (Moisture), $36, unlike the usual lotion or toners I’ve used before leaves an amazing layer of moisture on my skin after I wiped skin with it. It conditions skin and enhances skin with Clear Nanovitamin E, while preventing dullness. There are two versions, one for normal skin (Lotion I) and one for dry skin (Lotion II).

I also love ASTALIFT Lunamer Emulsion II (Moisture), $40 100ml, which has a light emulsion texture that delivers as much moisture as heavier moisturizers like a cream. For acne-prone skin that is as dry as mine, a cream would deliver the right about of moisture, however, it usually also leaves me with clogged pores in no time. This Emulsion II however, has a lighter texture than creams and is rather hydrating and thus a better option for dry acne-prone skin. For less dry skin, a lighter moisturiser is available - Emulsion I, is an option you can check out.

ASTALIFT Lunamer UV Protector SPF40/PA++, $42 30g, seems to be more hydrating and less oily than the usual sun filters I’ve used before. What more? It is packed with the highest amount of detoxifying ingredient Crown Sugar, which prevents harmful elements in the environment from penetrating deep into skin. It’s certainly a great protective product to protect skin not only from skin ageing UV rays but also from pollution like haze and car exhaust in the air.

TRIAL: SK-II Cellumination Day Surge UV and Cellumination Essence EX

I received SK-II Cellumination Day Surge UV, S$134 (50ml) and Cellumination Essence EX for trial.  SK-II Cellumination Day Surge UV is claimed to be powerpacked with a new active complex Aura Bright Cocktail D that leaves skin with more even skin tone and reduced yellowness after 14 days.

And Cellumination Essence EX is said to improve skin radiance in 1 week. It improves skin texture and tone, skin plumpness and collagen glycation, while treating freckles.  

So I included these two products into my skincare regime for over 2 weeks and I’m glad to report that true to their claims, my skin is more radiant than before after 1 week of use and a dark patch of hyperpigmentation also seemed lighter in one week. Obvious patches of uneven skin tone are lightened within these two weeks.

I love the light texture of these two products, which as it says seem to leave my skin with a light foundation-like veil on my complexion. And more than that, my dry skin felt hydrated upon application. It felt as if I do not need to apply any moisturiser over, but I still did just in case.

I think even if I do not have hyperpigmentation issues, this range would enhance my complexion even more and the “complexion with a foundation-like veil” claim would be even more evident.

One of the factors in SK-II Cellumination Day Surge UV that appeals to me is that it is a whitening emulsion with UV protection (SPF30/PA+++) - 3-in-1 (whitening, hydrator and SPF protection). I don’t think I’ve come across an emulsion packed with whitening benefits and sun protection that is this light.

I’d like to rave about this shampoo that I’ve been using for a while now - Kérastase Age Premium Bain Substantif Rejuvenating Shampoo, S$39 250ml. My hair is showing signs of ageing: thinning hair strands and more hair falls out at each shampoo. For a start, with my first shampoo (using this product) only a few strands of hair fell out. That is a great improvement from my regular off the shelf shampoos.It also leaves my hair less limp with improved body. The accompanying conditioner hydrates hair, removes kinks and loosens knotted ends. The styling hair mousse from this range adds body to hair as it holds curls. I am relieved to know that it also protects my hair from further damage from being exposed to free radicals and UV rays.

The holding property of this nourishing styling mousse is a surprise as it defines and holds my curls without weighing it down despite being enriching. It gives new definition to nourishing styling product. 
Updates: some viewers who have requested for these shampoo sachets found more volume in their hair after using this shampoo. Those with falling hair issues confirm less hair fall too.

REVIEW Moisture Up

Not just on the Korean silverscreen, but everywhere I turned in Seoul, 90% of the Koreans appear to have flawless skin. And the first thing I noticed about my Korean hosts who are in the 50s and above is they didn't even have frown lines on their foreheads! Living in a country experiencing 4 seasons and crisp dry air, one would find that fine lines and wrinkles form easily unless one has a good skincare regime or is born with the youth gene. I uncovered part of their secret on returning to our humid island - the good skin could be due to the use of skincare with snail extracts. This means that I have a good level of skin moisture. But as I have dry skin, this reading can only mean that the snail formulation is living up to its reputation of upping my skin moisture. REVIEW Dr Georgia Lee's Dual Use Moisturising Mask

I wish I had this DrGL Restore Gel Mask, $38 (100ml) and $68 (240ml) after my face firming salon procedure last year. I used this wonderfully cooling mask twice for this review - once before chilling it and the second time after it was chilled.


Mask Trial before chilling:My skin feels cool the moment it is smoothed on. I like the subtle delicious aroma of the herbs (like a not-so-sweet and yummy jelly dessert). At the end of the 20 minutes, the gel on some parts of my face was fully absorbed and my skin appears more hydrated than before.

Explanation from Dr Georgia Lee:

I am amazed that there was a cooling sensation even though it wasn't chilled before use. Explains Dr Georgia Lee, founder of TLC Medical Centre in Singapore, "The gel has remarkable absorption ability which goes right into the skin. This creates a cooling of the skin temperature and hence the cooling sensation is felt." When the 20 minutes was up, the amount of gel on my face seem to have reduced very slightly, while the gel seems to have penetrated the skin without a trace on some parts of the face. The latter parts of the face which seemed to have absorbed the gel had some rubbery bits when I rubbed my skin. According to Dr Lee, the rubbery texture is the remnant of excess gel that the skin could not absorb. It forms a protective layer over the skin.

I wanted to leave the gel on my face and use it like a sleeping mask after the session so I asked Dr Lee if it would clog up my skin. Apparently, Dr Lee assures that it is all right not to wipe off the excess mask as instructed on the packaging. 

Mask Trial after chilling the mask:
Great for a Saturday cool down, the chilled gel mask immediately cools the skin upon application - even more than when unchilled. At the end of the 20-minute masking session, there was less gel on my skin compared to when the gel was used unchilled. This time I also applied the gel over my very dry lips and went to bed with the excess gel mask on my face (using it like sleeping mask).  The result? Both my skin and lips are better hydrated the next morning sans clogs. The pimple that has been bothering me for days also seem to be drier than before -- feels like there's a scab over the bump. Lips are smoother, softer and fuller with less obvious lines.

Explanation from Dr Lee:
According to Dr Lee, using it chilled is highly recommended especially on skin which has just undergone laser treatment or burnt from tanning. When the mask is chilled before use, the cold improves the efficacy of the mask. It soothes burnt skin with an “ice pack“ effect, while hydrating skin to further reduce redness through vasoconstriction (reduction of blood vessels from the cold effect), says Dr Lee.

Smoother hands the monring after

I went to bed after smoothing on a thin layer of this mask over my face and hands. I was greeted with plumped up complexion and smoother hands the next morning. I had forgotten that I had gone to bed with the mask as my complexion wasn't sticky when I looked in the mirror, just more plumped up than the day before. I am amazed yet again by the positive results.

This gel is a great travel companion as it treats wind burns however, it is not moisturising enough to prevent it, cautions Dr Lee. So to prevent wind burns in drier climates, layer this wonder gel with a richer moisturiser over it. "It is important for the Restore Gel to be in direct contact with the skin so that skin receives maximim benefits of the soothing ingredients," reminds Dr Lee on the sequence of gel application. 

Packaging
I love its light weight packaging and practical twist-to-lock pump dispenser. When there is no time to rebottle this into a smaller container, these two plus points make it suitable for throwing into the toiletry bag.

Product response so far 

Those who have used this gel love it for its high hydration properties without leaving skin clogged. "Our product was sold out in 6 weeks after the initial retail market launch in Jan 2013," shares Dr Lee.

Conclusion: Personally, the efficacy and price point of the product makes it a MUST BUY considering that most commercial face masks start from $50 and above for a 100ml bottle. I would alternate this with my other face masks as hydration is key in achieving youthful skin.

Friendly Advice

My friend told me these few products from ASTALIFT are all I need to protect my dry skin from the drying effects of the cold winter in Seoul. My Experience

I also love the very mild scent of damask rose in the range which relaxes me and soothes my skin. Apparently, it is said that the aromatic effects of damask rose goes beyond skin-deep to also lower one's blood pressure. So if you are a tense person like me, this would be a great skincare to consider journeying with.
