Mid-Autumn Festival 2013
The Chinese celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Cake Festival on September 19 this year. Falling on the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar every year, it may have originated from the celebration of bountiful harvest or harmonious union in the olden days.
In Singapore, most Chinese families would gather in the evening to admire the beauty of the full moon, which shines at its brightest and appear to be largest at this time of the year, while enjoying moon cakes over cups of brewed Chinese tea. Children look forward to some fun strolling around playgrounds or gardens with a lighted lantern, or should I say showing off their new lanterns. This is also the time of the year when the usually deserted parks would be filled with people and joyous laughter.
