Animal lovers and animal testing activists have something to cheer about since 11 March 2013.
Over the years you would have read about the lobbying for ban on animal testing. Finally, on 11 March 2013, an immediate ban was issued on the sale new cosmetics containing ingredients tested on animals.
Testing ban (ingredients and blends):11 March 2009.
Marketing ban (all human health effects with the exception of repeated-dose toxicity, reproductive toxicity and toxicokinetics): 11 March 2009 .
Marketing ban (specific health effects): 11 March 2013, irrespective of the availability of alternative non-animal tests
(extracted from the European Commission website)Most giants like Estee Lauder and L'Oreal group and most beauty houses with products sold in Singapore indicate that they do not test on animals unless required by law in certain countries like China. This EU ban does not affect Singapore's rule on cosmetics. But it may spell an increase in cosmetics sale in the other parts of the world and Singapore (at stone and mortar outlets and online), when those residing in the EU can't live without their usual skincare.
Scientific Future
There are experts and scientists who feel that this ban may hinder progress in science and the search for more potent and effective products for our skincare needs. I wonder what your view is?
For the Animal Lover and Activist against Animal Cruelty
Following the EU Ban, The Body Shop and Cruelty Free International are now actively campaigning for a global ban in animal testing. To be part of this activity, sign your pledge at any The Body Shop stores or online at www.crueltyfreeinternational.org/globalpledge.
